A Canada 150 Project
Written by Robert Crout, 2017
The Commemorative Bench has been installed in a fitting location, in Harrold Place Park, facing the splash pad. The location was chosen for three reasons. First, the bench has been placed in the heart of what has always been referred to as the Vets Housing in Carlington. This is believed to be some of the earliest, if not the first, housing constructed for returning Vets of WWII. Secondly, it is placed facing the young (the next generation) playing and having fun. Lastly, it was located there for those seeking peace and contemplation.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank those who helped complete the project. The funds were raised by “The Vets Kids,” an organization representing the first generation of kids raised in the Vets Housing of Carlington. Members from across Canada and the U.S. raised the funds for the project. Also a thank-you must go to city staff for their guidance. Lastly, I would like to thank the Legion for granting permission to use the Poppy Symbol on the Plaque.
The Veterans Commemorative Bench is a way of remembering and saying thank you to all those who served.
